What you eat while grieving matters!

Grief can have a significant impact on an individual's nutritional habits and overall well-being. When someone is grieving, they may experience changes in appetite, eating patterns, and food choices. These changes can be influenced by various factors, including emotional distress, stress

hormones, social support, and cultural practices. Here are some ways grief can affect nutrition:

  1. Appetite Changes: Grieving individuals may experience fluctuations in appetite, ranging from a decrease in hunger to increased emotional eating. Some people may have difficulty eating at all due to feelings of nausea or loss of interest in food.
  2. Emotional Eating: Food can serve as a source of comfort and solace during times of grief. Emotional eating, which involves consuming food to cope with difficult emotions rather than to satisfy physical hunger, may lead to unhealthy eating habits and weight gain.
  3. Nutrient Intake: Grieving individuals may be at risk of inadequate nutrient intake if they are not consuming a balanced diet. Poor nutrition can weaken the immune system, decrease energy levels, and exacerbate feelings of fatigue and depression.
  4. Hydration: Emotional distress and crying can lead to dehydration if individuals are not adequately replenishing fluids. Proper hydration is essential for overall health and well-being.
  5. Social Support and Eating Habits: Grief can affect social interactions, including mealtime routines. For some people, eating alone may become more common, leading to changes in portion sizes and meal choices. Conversely, grieving individuals may also find comfort in communal meals shared with loved ones.
  6. Cultural and Religious Influences: Cultural and religious beliefs can play a significant role in shaping dietary practices during times of grief. Some cultures have specific rituals and foods associated with mourning and funeral ceremonies.
  7. Self-Care and Nutrition: During periods of grief, self-care activities such as meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking may become challenging. It's essential for individuals to prioritize their nutritional needs and seek support from friends, family, or healthcare professionals if necessary.

I get it!

I know the toll that grief can take on the body! When my husband died in a tragic accident, I had to navigate a new life. I wish I knew then what I know now about the physical impacts of grief on the body. I get it, nothing is easy right now,  but making a few nutritional and/or lifestyle modifications (like remembering to eat!) can help reduce cortisol levels,  stress and inflammation, help to increase the energy you need to deal with the emotional aspect, and lead to overall physical well being.
